In which John Green finally gets around to talking about some women’s history. In the 19th Century, the United States was changing rapidly, as we noted in the recent Market Revolution and Reform Movements episodes. Things were also in a state of flux for women. The reform movements, which were in large part driven by women, gave these self-same women the idea that they could work on their own behalf, and radically improve the state of their own lives. So, while these women were working on prison reform, education reform, and abolition, they also started talking about equal rights, universal suffrage, temperance, and fair pay. Women like Susan B. Anthony, Carry Nation, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the Grimkés, and Lucretia Mott strove tirelessly to improve the lot of American women, and it worked, eventually. John will teach you about the Christian Temperance Union, the Seneca Falls Convention, the Declaration of Sentiments, and a whole bunch of other stuff that made life better for women.

This might seem kind of a weird thing to fuss about, but in Princess and the Frog, after Naveen calls Tiana a stick in the mud, she goes on a tirade about how she’s had to work two jobs all her life while he’s done nothing. I’m not saying the idea of her argument is bad (I applaud her for standing up to Naveen). But the whole reason *why* she is working those two jobs is because she’s determined to have enough money to get a restaurant of her own. It’s her own choice to work as hard as she does. No one is forcing her to, so her act of long-suffering kind of confuses me, but maybe I’m missing something. She should be *proud* that she’s working those two jobs in order to make her dream come true…not acting as if the whole concept is just a burden with no reward. I love the movie, but this is just something I’m curious about.

I don’t think Tiana is ever not proud of working so hard to get her dream, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t get frustrated by it every once in awhile. That’s kind of what I saw happened in that scene. She’s frustrated that Naveen’s attitudes towards work and money (plus the fact that he could get whatever he wanted with a snap of his fingers), while she has to work hard each and every day.
